“Dolly’s Simulacra” 04:47, (2019)

I WROTE THIS DOWN BECAUSE I AM DUMB, BUT I AM ALSO VERY SMART. YOU KNOW THIS BECAUSE DOLLY IS A BUSINESSWOMAN, BUT I AM ALSO BLONDE.

DOLLY IS THE EPITOME OF SIMULACRA: DOLLY’S BODY BREAKS THE BOUNDARIES OF THE NATURAL WORLD (SCOFIELD, 661). BAUDRILLARD SAYS IN THE SEMINAL TEXT, SIMULACRA AND SIMULATIONS: “IT IS RATHER A QUESTION OF SUBSTITUTING SIGNS OF THE REAL FOR THE REAL ITSELF; THAT IS, AN OPERATION TO DETER EVERY REAL PROCESS BY ITS OPERATIONAL DOUBLE, A METASTABLE, PROGRAMMATIC, PERFECT DESCRIPTIVE MACHINE WHICH PROVIDES ALL THE SIGNS OF THE REAL AND SHORT-CIRCUITS ALL ITS VICISSITUDES.
NEVER AGAIN WILL THE REAL HAVE TO BE PRODUCED:

THIS IS THE VITAL FUNCTION OF THE MODEL IN A SYSTEM OF DEATH, OR RATHER OFANTICIPATED RESURRECTIONWHICH NO LONGER LEAVES ANY CHANCE EVEN IN THE EVENT OF DEATH. A HYPERREAL HENCEFORTH SHELTERED FROM THE IMAGINARY, AND FROM ANY DISTINCTION BETWEEN THE REAL AND THE IMAGINARY, LEAVING ROOM ONLY FOR THE ORBITAL RECURRENCE OF MODELS AND THE SIMULATED GENERATION OF DIFFERENCE” (BAUDRILLARD, SIMULACRA AND SIMULATIONS, FROM JEAN BAUDRILLARD, SELECTED WRITINGS, ED. MARK POSTER (STANFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS. 1988), PP 166-184.)

“PEOPLE COME UP TO ME AND ASK: ‘ARE YOU THE REAL DOLLY PARTON?’ AND I SAY HONEY, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS THE REAL DOLLY PARTON” (SCOFIELD, 661). DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU’RE A JOKE, THEY ASK? WHY YES, DOLLY IS A JOKE!

NEVER AGAIN WILL THE REAL HAVE TO BE PRODUCED, HE SAID. AND YOU KNOW, “IT TAKES A LOT OF MONEY TO LOOK THIS CHEAP.” IT’S TRUE! DON’T LOOK AT ME LIKE THAT! JUST LOOK AT MY TITS!DOLLY IS JUST A BUNCH OF TRASHED ROLLED TOGETHER. IT’S LABOR, YOU SEE, OF A BODILY KIND, I CAN DEFEAT MY BODY TO FIND THE TRUE SELF. “I AM NOT A NATURAL BEAUTY,” (PARTON, PARKINSON) DON’T LAUGH, IT’S TRUE! I WILL TRANSFORM, I SAID THAT. YOU MIGHT SAY ITS CORPOREAL BUT AREN’T WE ALL “SHOW DOGS”, “SHOW PONIES”?“SOME FOLKS SEE MY ARTIFICIAL LOOK AND THINK I HAVE NO DEPTH. BUT MY INNER SADNESS AND JOY ARE AS REAL AS MY HAIR AND NAILS ARE FAKE. THAT’S WHAT I LIKE—LOOKING LIKE ONE THING AND BEING ANOTHER” (SCOFIELD, 668). MY FAKENESS IS MORE GENUINE THAN YOUR REALITY, YOU HEARD IT FROM ME. I WAS BORN ON A MOUNTAIN, “THE JOKE IS THAT THE HICK WHO STRIKES IT RICH ALWAYS GOES OUT FIRST THING AND BUYS A CADILLAC. SO DID THIS HICK. I STILL LIKE CADILLACS. I GUESS I’M JUST A CADILLAC KIND OF GIRL” (PARTON, 167).DO YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT I REALLY SAID?I WAS SMALL AND WE WERE ON THE STREET. OK, WELL, MAMA, I WANT TO LOOK LIKE TRASH. THAT’S WHAT I SAID. WELL, MAMA, DOLLY WANTS TO LOOK LIKE TRASH. THERE IS SUBVERSIVE POTENTIAL IN THE TRASH. TRASH IS BOUNDARYLESS.

MY BODY IS JUST AS MUCH A SHRINE TO TRASH AS IT IS TO TENNESSEE, TO THE MOUNTAIN. AND IT’S TRUE, “IT TAKES A LOT OF MONEY TO LOOK THIS CHEAP” (PARTON, DOLLY IN LONDON, 1983). YOU KNOW, “HE WOULD CALL ME JEZEBEL AND THEN SHAKE HIS HEAD AND SAY ‘LORD, THE DEVIL MUST HAVE MADE YOU WEAR YOUR CLOTHES THAT WAY AND BLEACH YOUR HAIR LIKE THAT.’ AND I WOULD SAY, ‘NO OFFENSE, GRANDDADDY, BUT I DID THIS ALL BY MYSELF. THE DEVIL HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT” (PARTON, 97).

MY MODIFICATION IS JUST AS MUCH GOD’S PLAN. THAT IS WHY I AM ETERNAL, I ANTICIPATE RESURRECTION. IT IS RATHER A QUESTION OF SUBSTITUTING SIGNS OF THE REAL FOR THE REAL ITSELF.
